Effective tips to score full mark in biology in NEET exam

NEET is the most prestigious and toughest medical entrance exam. It requires a lot of hard work and proper planning to crack the NEET. Questions for the NEET are asked from Physics, Chemistry, and Biology. Students with smart planning can crack the NEET by focusing more on biology as it has the highest weightage and is the most scoring subject. It has 90 questions with a total of 360 marks. You should set your mind to score 360 in this section and not less than that.

This article provides you with the right ways to study to score full marks in biology.

  1. Know The Important Chapters: You need to have a proper strategy to score full marks in biology. Reading anything and everything is a very bad idea and you are just wasting time. All chapters are a must-read. But at the same time, you should know which chapters to prioritize based on the NEET Biology Weightage

Questions for the biology section will be asked from both conceptual biology and factual biology. There are a few important topics from these categories which the students should master as they have always been asked in the exam. They are Plant Physiology, Ecology, Cell Biology, Morphology of plants, Human Physiology, Molecular Basis of Inheritance, Genetics, Biomolecules, and Biotechnology. A bulk of questions are asked from these chapters. Also, there are a few units in which you have to study only from NCERT and not any other source as questions will not be asked outside the NCERT. They are Ecology, Plant physiology, Diversity in the living world, Biology in human welfare, and Biotechnology.

  1. Refer To The NCERT Books: Strictly speaking, you don’t have to read tons of books. Just stick to the NCERT books of Class 11 and 12 as 80% of the questions directly or indirectly are asked from the NCERT only. All the concepts are explained very clearly in simple language. Read all the chapters line by line along with the examples and do you know boxes multiple times as questions are asked literally from any line. Highlight all the important points and facts. You should practice each and every labeled diagram. Students should have strong command over the NCERT books as it is the main source to score full marks in the exam. Make short notes/ mindmaps/flashcards/ flowcharts on your own as you study as it will help you to revise in the last few days before the exam. Only after mastering the NCERT books, one must consider referring to other reference books such as
  • Objective NCERT at your fingertips – MTG
  • Arihant
  • NCERT Exemplar
  • Cengage
  • Trueman’s biology
  1. Clarity In Concepts: Students should have strong conceptual clarity in all the topics as biology requires you to understand and learn processes and names. This is because sometimes questions can be asked by combining one or more concepts. To solve it, you need to make your concepts clear. This is the reason why you shouldn’t skip any topic. Revise the entire syllabus at least 10 times in a year and 2-3 times 2 months before the exam. Ignoring the NCERT over coaching materials will bring only a disadvantage to you as 75 questions are directly asked from NCERT only.
  2. Prepare Small Notes: As the syllabus is huge, it will be difficult to remember all. So, the best way to score full marks in Biology is to make your own handwritten notes, flow charts, tables, and shortcuts to study important topics like Glycolysis pathway, Krebs cycle, etc. This will also help you to save a lot of time during the last-minute revision instead of going through the entire book and you can recall it by just glancing.
  3. NEET Mock Tests: After studying the entire syllabus thoroughly, you should start attempting the mock tests to evaluate your preparation and understanding level. Practice mock tests as many as you can 1-2 months before the exam. Do not get disappointed with the scores you get in the mock test. Instead, analyze where you went wrong and are weak in. You should try to improve it and avoid the same mistake with the next test. Improve your score with each test and learn from your mistakes. Mock tests help the students to build time management skills as there is limited time to complete the NEET.
  4. Solve Previous Year Papers: Practicing at least the last 10 previous papers is a must for you to perform better in the exam. Practicing it is not just enough. You should analyze the paper thoroughly. Know from which topics or chapters, most of the questions are coming and predict which questions might appear in the upcoming exam.
  5. Revise Thoroughly: The competition for NEET is extremely tough. Just studying is not enough to crack the exam. What’s the use if you have studied so hard and at last you forget it. To avoid that, you need to keep on revising from time to time. Important points and chapters should be revised regularly as it will help you to remember better. Make use of the short notes and flashcards etc.
  6. Practice MCQs to Improve Biology for NEET: Practicing MCQs is important as there are more chances of you remembering what you have practiced than what you read. If you have the “NCERT At Your Fingertips” book, practice it as it is very useful. All the questions are segregated effectively to test your skills on the NCERT. It’s not an issue if you don’t have this book. It will be enough if you practice all previous years’ questions and mock tests.
  7. When To Attempt The Biology Section: It is advised you first finish the biology section in the first 45 minutes as physics and chemistry take a lot of time to finish. You can get a better score when you ace the biology part as it is the easiest and most scoring section.

Hope these tips help you to secure full marks in the biology section for you to crack the NEET exam. All the best!!
