Data leakage of Russian takeout application, including the dining habits of GRU secret service personnel

Data leakage of Russian takeout application

According to The Verge report, a large-scale data leak of Yandex Food, a Russian takeaway platform, exposed the delivery addresses, telephone numbers, identities, and delivery instructions associated to the Russian secret police, according to the investigative results of bellingcat.

On March 1, Yandex Food, a subsidiary of Yandex, a prominent Russian Internet corporation, first announced a data leak, blaming it on “dishonesty” on the part of one of its workers and emphasizing that the loss did not contain the user’s login information. The Russian communications regulator, Roskomnadzor, then threatened to punish the corporation up to 100000 rubles (7652 yuan) for the breach. According to Reuters, the hack exposed the personal information of approximately 58000 users. Roskomnadzor also disabled access to online maps containing this information, obfuscating the identities of regular persons and Russian army and security personnel.

The article notes out that if researchers can find that much information from a meal delivery app’s data, it’s a little unsettling to consider how much user data Ubereats, DoorDash, Grubhub, and other companies control. The data breach at DoorDash in 2019 exposed the names, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, takeout order details, shipping addresses, and other personal information of 4.9 million users, far more than the Yandex Food data breach.

In the age of big data, organizations are confronted with the enormous issue of storing and backing up huge amounts of data in a secure, reliable, and long-term manner. If the company’s critical data is mistakenly destroyed or leaked, it would result in enormous losses, waste the hard work that has been put in, and even disrupt the company’s routine operations. Enterprise data security should be emphasized under this circumstances.
