How we make a shortlist
Reasonable screen size
The brass cuts on the screen are bigger than better because almost every task a writer has to complete, be it research, writing, or administrator assignments. Only weight (portability) and battery life prevent this rule because large screens are heavier and consume more power.
For this reason, we cannot recommend models such as the 9.7 ″ or 10.1 ”iPad Pro or 10” Microsoft Surface Go – the screen size is too small for everyday use. It also dominates all models in the popular Samsung Galaxy line and offers screen sizes of 10.5 ”and smaller. Writers need something to wear comfortably and to focus on all day, which actually means that the best tablet has a screen size larger than 11 “and at best 12”.
Operating system
Many large screen tablets use Windows 10, which means that it is compatible with most files and programs within the Windows ecosystem. Open Office documents are written in Word and Excel without any problems and you can browse the Internet using Internet Explorer.
Controversially, Apple OS X (the operating system used by Mac laptops) refused to port it to the iPad, instead of releasing an iOS version called iPadOS. For everyone who uses the iPhone, the iPadOS is well known and includes some enhanced features such as split-screen, drag-and-drop functionality, and the ability to read a USB stick.

Connectivity:
One of the biggest benefits of a tablet device is that it has many built-in LTE / 4G connections. This means there is no need to hesitate when searching for wifi hotspots because your device is constantly online. You usually have to pay for a data subscription to use this feature (some operators attach a free payment to the secondary data with the main mobile phone line), but it is much more convenient to eliminate the need to find a wifi hotspot if you wish. It works (and at home your tablet logs into your home wifi network as usual). One consideration is that the use of LTE / 4G has a significant impact on battery life.
Storage:
Storage is closely related to the above because modern operating systems rely heavily on cloud storage, which in turn relies on an Internet connection. While storing all your documents in the cloud has many great benefits (including eliminating the need to do your job if you lose or change your device), one of the biggest is reducing the need for onboard storage. So while you may not be able to think of a traditional laptop with less than 100 GB of storage, a basic level of 64 GB iPad Pro and 128 GB Surface Pro 7 is enough for most people.
Screen illumination:
When you look at the screen all day, you should see it clearly. Our best options are clear and crisp screens with the highest pixel density of most laptop screens.
Battery life:
Many tablets and laptops offer “all-day battery life”, which means about 10 hours of continuous use – fast enough for a day of walking. Keep in mind, however, that mileage may vary depending on the software you’re using and whether you’re running multiple apps at once (for example, if you want to write with a YouTube video playing in the background, be prepared for battery life.)
Ports:
Manufacturers are increasingly opting to remove ports from devices in favor of Bluetooth wireless solutions. If you don’t have wireless headphones yet, do so, even though our best choice is USB-A and USB-C ports.
Stylus / Mouse:
Modern touch screens should free us from the limitations of the mouse, but we’ve found that all-day use often requires more types of inputs that aren’t for the brave. Two of our tips include stylus support (beware, costs more), and our best selection also includes a mouse. However, it should be emphasized that these are personal preferences – our advice is to try to get used to life without a mouse or stylus before investing in them if it is really impossible.
Weight:
The tablet should be portable – better than a laptop. This is more important if you are a travel writer (such as a freelancer or coffee shop) than an employee writer or someone who sits in the office all day. Two of our tips weigh less than 800 g without the corresponding keyboard covers, while the covers add another 300-400 g. So expect to carry 1.2 kg under your arm, which is similar to a MacBook Air and good compared to other laptops. which weighs 1.5 kg or more. Durability: Tablet screens are more durable than laptop screens because they are designed to be touched.
