Sharing a similar experience, my aunt suddenly developed mental health trouble. After visiting many renowned psychologists in Karachi she was diagnosed with severe depression. Later, it was found she was suffering from depression for many years that no one perceived as a health issue unless things went out of hand. 

Don’t blame yourself, you are not solely responsible for what you go through. It’s all about the general perceptions and consideration of mental health!

Word HEALTH is often taken as physical health but rarely do we talk about mental health. Mental health is integral to our overall well being and affects a person’s quality of life with a greater magnitude. There could be many causes for poor mental health. Some of these include;

  • Traumatic past experiences especially childhood traumas
  • Social discrimination and disadvantage
  • Societal stigma
  • Long term stress
  • Loneliness
  • Going through discrimination
  • Emotional or worldly loses
  • Poor physical health

How to Improve your Mental Health?

All these factors together contribute to poor mental health that can get severe if remain unaddressed. Remember you are the first person to find it out and your behaviour defines what you will be heading towards. Here are a few things that you can try to improve your mental health.

1- Getting enough sleep

There are many ways in which poor sleep quality or inadequate sleep can be detrimental to your overall health. Staying awake for extended periods not only takes a toll on your physical health but also affects your mental health. Sleep deprivation leads to hormonal imbalances that could be one cause for emotional imbalance leading to mental health troubles.

2- Eat well

The relationship between food and health isn’t new for anyone. It is often said that we become what we eat and our mental health is no exception to this. You can get an idea of it by noticing that eating certain foods can make us happy.

It’s because the food we eat can affect our hormonal levels that are responsible for our emotions and feeling of wellness. Various studies found that eating certain nutrients deficiencies (i.e. vitamin B12) are linked with anxiety and stress.

3- Increase your sunlight exposure

Another way to improve your mental health is by extending your exposure to the sunlight. Sunlight exposures are known to be an effective mood booster ultimately improving your mental health. The reason behind this is that sunlight is a rich source of Vitamin D that is known to improve brain functioning. Sunlight exposure induces our brain to produce chemicals that can uplift your mood improving your mental health.

4- Physical activity

The benefits of physical activity are not new for physical and mental health. Talking about the benefits of exercise for mental health takes in improved focus and brain activity as a result of physical activity. Routine activities can make you dull and feeling lethargic but do you know that physical activity creates a feeling of accomplishment boosting your mood thus, improving your mental health.

5- Stay away from stresses

Stress is bad for your mental health so keeping it aside can significantly impact your mental health. Though many of your daily life stresses can’t be avoided you can learn stress management.
