What to do before you sell your iPhone, iPad or iPod

What to do before you sell your iPhone, iPad or iPod

Use these steps to transfer information to a new device and delete personal data from the old device. Selling, giving, giving or acting on your device, you should first delete your personal information from the old device after transferring information to your new device. For example, do not manually delete contacts, calendars, memory, documents, photos, or other iCloud information while using Apple ID to log in to iCloud. This will delete the contents of the iCloud server and all the devices logged in to iCloud.

If you still have your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch

You should keep in mind these things if you are thinking “I want to sell my old iPhone.” To transfer information to a new device and delete personal data from an older device, follow these steps:

Transfer information to a new device

If you’re using a new iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, and you’re using iOS 11, or later, you can use Quick Start to automatically transfer information from your old device to your new device.

So, if you’re using iOS 10 or earlier, use iCloud, iTunes or the Finder to transfer the information to your new device.

If your phone number changes on a new device, add a trusted phone number to your account, so you don’t lose access. If you can’t access your old phone number, you can generate a two-factor verification code on your old device if you want.

Delete personal data from older devices

  1. If you’re pairing your Apple Watch with your iPhone, unpair your Apple Watch.
  2. Perform Backup for your device.
  3. Sign out from iCloud and iTunes & App Store.
  4. If you are using iOS 10.3 or later, tap Settings> My Name. Scroll down and tap Sign Out. Enter your Apple ID password, and tap Turn Off.
  5. If you’re using iOS 10.2 or earlier, tap Settings> iCloud> Sign Out. Tap Sign Out again, then tap Remove from My Devices and enter your Apple ID password. Then go to Settings> iTunes & App Store> Apple ID> Sign Out.
  6. If you wish to switch to a non-Apple phone, unsubscribe from iMessage.
  7. Go back to Settings and tap General> Transfer or Reset Devices> Erase All Content and Settings. If you have to Find My [device] turned on, you may be required to enter your Apple ID and password. When prompted, if your device is using eSIM, select to clear your device and eSIM profile.
  8. Enter the device passcode or restriction passcode when prompted. Then tap Erase [Device].
  9. Contact your wireless service provider for information on transferring services to the new owner. If you do not use a SIM card on your device, you can contact the new owner to transfer the service to the new owner.
  10. Remove older devices from a list of trusted devices.

When you want to delete the iPhone, iPad or iPod touch, look down the [Device] and the activation lock.

iPhone, iPad or iPod no longer in your possession

If the above steps have not been completed, perform the following steps with no device.

  1.  Ask a new owner to delete all content and settings in the above procedure.
  2. If your device uses iCloud and Find My [device], sign in to the Find My app on iCloud.com / find or another device, select your device, and click Extinguish. When the device is empty, click Remove from your account.
  3. If you cannot complete any of the above steps, change your Apple ID password. This will not delete your personal information stored on your old device, but it will prevent new owners from deleting your information from iCloud.
  4. If you wish to switch to a non-Apple phone, unsubscribe from iMessage.
  5. If you’re using Apple Pay, you can remove your credit or debit card at iCloud.com. To see which device is using Apple Pay, select Account Settings and click your device. Click Delete next to Apple Pay.
  6. Remove the old device from the list of trusted devices.
